The Dying Citizen by Victor Davis Hanson: Take California...for example

The Dying Citizen:
How Progressive Elites, Tribalism, and Globalization
Are Destroying the Idea of America
Victor Davis Hanson
Published 2021

(reading in progress)

Victor Davis Hanson, who lives in California, wrote about the problems with that state in his most recent book The Dying Citizen. I touched on this from my own experience on my other blog before I read this chapter. Hanson said (and I paraphrase):

Twenty-first century California has a disappearing middle class. Soon it will be two classes: rich and poor. California is an icon of post modernism, where citizenship is extinguishing. It is a Progressive dream. The state is the leader in "awful things": it leads in high taxes, poverty, welfare, homelessness, gas taxes/prices, electricity, illegals/migrants, worst schools, worst roads, and highest ratio of inequality.

Its green policies are expensive, unaffordable, and unreliable. One fifth of Californians live below poverty. Green power is the least of their concern. Regarding the state's excessive wildfires, it is known that controlled burns are discouraged, as well as removing dry brush and dead trees, grazing, logging, and the timber industry, whose policies are actually instrumental in controlling wildfires. The fires cause air pollution every year.

The state has wasted billions on high speed rail to nowhere instead of fixing or repairing already troubled road projects. Open borders and hundreds of sanctuary cities throughout the state have permitted millions of abject poor with few skills to enter the U.S. They account for twenty-five percent of the state's population.

Unfortunately, few of these problems affect the wealthy who politically support these policies and laws. The state's wealthy oppose charter schools while they send their children to expensive private schools for the rich. Meanwhile public schools are full of impoverished students, mainly immigrants from Central America and Mexico.

Much of the middle class say nothing -- they leave the state.

San Francisco has the highest economic inequality: the top one percent made $36 million, while the bottom 99% made $81 thousand. The state's income tax was the highest at 13.3% until New York decided to top it. One hundred fifty thousand households pay half the total annual state income tax, while forty percent pay zero state income tax.

What do the middle class get for the income tax they pay? Poor schools, crumbling infrastructure, high crime, high fuel and food prices, some of the most expensive housing prices in the nation, high business regulations and taxes.

Small businesses are leaving California for Texas, where the business environment if friendly, and retirees are leaving, as well. Mostly conservatives are leaving, enshrining the state in its destructive policies and creating a permanent monopoly. California can only become poorer.

During the scamdemic, California was the first to lock down and the last to open up. (I would argue, it's still not fully opened. The governor has his finger on the button, ready for the next hit -- his hit. You should see what they are doing to young people!) Oh, but it paid out generous subsidies and fell short $60 to 100 billion. Now it is looking at an estate tax.

California, the trendsetter, where bad ideas originate (see, I'm not the only one saying it), is transforming its middle class into a modern traditional peasantry. It rates at the bottom for education and infrastructure, suffers high crime rates for many of its cities, hasn't updated its freeways or dams since the 1980s. Dams would help the thirty million who live in the state's desert climate. Can you believe...the state restricts water to its Central Valley for agriculture? (BTW, I witnessed this on a drive through the CV to San Francisco about ten years ago, where farmers posted signs begging voters to tell Congress to send water!)

The state is dividing its people into Haves and Have Nots. Half of the nation's homeless live in sunny California. (It is a great place if you live outdoors most of the time because it never rains.) One third of Americans on public assistance live in California. One fifth (mostly immigrants) live below poverty, and one third of residents are on Medical. Medical paid for half of all births in the state; thirty percent of undocumented moms come without English or skills. Twenty-seven percent residence in California were not born in the United States. And this I do not get: 5.5 million California immigrants were eligible to vote in 2020!!

What is California's rationale? To tax the middle class to death and give, in return, poor state service? Why do citizens make poor choices in self-government? The wealthy are not harmed by these policies because they have ways out, loop holes, and influence. Meanwhile, the poor pay little to no taxes and receive generous entitlements. The middle class are left holding the bag.

Now there is only a single party rule. The Democrats have supermajorities in both houses of government. California is the model for the wealthy medieval keep of the coastal elite. It's a filthy rich state, though their farms are vanishing. It's like a tale of two worlds: a highly sophisticated, regulated uniform costal gentry vs. an impoverished interior of immigrants, with little ability or desire to adhere to rules, living on welfare, healthcare, food, housing, transportation, and legal assistance, with little education. And they know all the programs. They're free!

It's a scary thought, but it could happen if California is the model for the nation: a one party governance, drive out the middle class, import poor from abroad, enable staggering levels of global wealth concentrated in the hands of a few and one power source forever. And if California is the model, well, you can see for yourself what the end result will be.

Let's just say: you better hope you are part of the wealthy elite.

Covid Operation : What Happened, Why It Happened, and What's Next by Pamela Popper / Shane Prier

Covid Operation : What Happened, Why It Happened, and What's Next
Pamela Popper / Shane Prier
Published 2020
⭐⭐⭐⭐

If you figured things out a long time ago, then great! But for those only now questioning the truth, good; this is a book to start with if you want to know more.

Covid Operation is cohesively organized, sensibly written, and well documented with supporting evidence at the end of each chapter. The title and subtitle tell you exactly what to expect. It is a quick, easy read about the origins, the players, the purposes, the consequences, and the possibilities beyond. In addition, personal stories (often heart breaking) are included in the "Consequences" chapter.

Covid Operation was written and released in August 2020. Popper suspected early on that the numbers of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths did not justify lockdowns, restrictions, or masks, and she spoke out about it immediately. I cannot remember  how I discovered Pam's show, but it was early 2020. I found her short videos on YouTube regarding the universal response to the virus. She talked about how none of it made sense: the obsession with cases, the inconsistent lockdowns for small businesses but not big businesses, the science that did not support masks, the hypocritical governors turned emperors, the encouraged violent riots in the summer while restrictions for sports and other outdoor activities remained, and many other contradictions addressed in Covid Operation

On her channel, she highlighted the consequences of the lockdowns, school shutdowns, job losses, and business closures. People began writing letters to her, sharing their heartbreak and frustrations, including suicides of loved ones, and Pam read those stories on her show.

Pam even discussed how she lost friends and colleagues whom she had worked with for years on issues of health and healthy living and eating, because they did not agree with her questioning government, the health departments, CDC, WHO, lockdowns, masks, and the like. They could no longer support her because of her position on the state of things, though she came to accept it because she made new friends and encouraged others in her position to make new friends with people who shared similar ideas.

And even better...very, VERY early on, Pam mobilized people. Talk about being pro active: she formed groups and encouraged people to do in their communities what she was doing. (See Make Americans Free Again.) She wanted people to connect locally and help each other - doctors, teachers, nurses, farmers, ranchers, construction workers, mothers, fathers, church members, and anyone who knew how to do anything at all - converge and work together, form local systems and serve one another.

I love Pam's spirit and perseverance. She is a leader and a stateswoman. She loves liberty and self-government, not power and control. She expects Americans to be responsible grownups. Pam pointed out daily that Americans were cowering in fear under the lies of little egomaniacs like Anthony Fauci and the threats of tyrannical governors and their unelected health officers. She basically encouraged her viewers to just ignore them and get on with life.

I totally agreed with her because in my environment that was my personal experience and observation. Nothing made sense, and I could not stand living in a world where nothing made sense. It was maddening!

I think it would be great if she did a follow up for 2021 - the year of the jab - because I believe the story behind the jab and the psychology implemented to make people comply is just as dangerous to American liberties and survival. But I sense that Popper has moved on, and she wants us to do the same. Ignore these liars and thieves.

That is exactly how I have always felt about this entire mess. Is there a new virus? You bet.  Was it manufactured? Definitely. Did people die from it? Yes. But the numbers were inflated to create fear and hysteria so that everyone would comply with the draconian instructions. Everything was done differently than typical epidemics of years past because now there is a global concerted purpose and effort to prepare the world for new mandatory vaccinations, mass surveillance and control, digital currencies, and to usher in a global elite-controlled corporatist/technocratic government. Don't take my word for it; read Klown Schwab's own words: Covid 19: The Great Reset. (That's just my review, but I mean for you to read it and hear it from the elite's own mouth.)

I knew it was all a BIG/FAT lie because of the inconsistency of those whom the media propped up, like Fauci. That man was all over the place about masks, the spread of the virus, and later the jab. It was apparent to me that he did not know the truth about anything. He was basically making things up as he rolled along. I knew he was a fraud even before I read The Real Anthony Fauci. (Again, my review, but read the book yourself to get a history of the man.)

There are so many other warriors out there armed with the truth. Some of us cannot be scammed, and we don't want anyone else to be fooled. If you are done with the lies, Covid Operation is one of many sources; and here are some others:

Amazing Polly  (out of Canada) An amazing independent voice, kicked off YouTube for telling too much truth.

Peggy Hall  and her YoutTube Channel (out of California) A champion, never tires of fighting the rubbish coming form Emperor Newsom and his Health Oppressors. She has armed Californians with the law.

The Great Barrington Declaration Three reputable doctors came together to point out the farce of lockdowns of healthy people and warned of the dangers very early on. It was a cry for sanity, but the world has not listened.

Dr. Malone One of the many doctors who has given up his peace and quiet to stop the medical tyranny. He reminds me of a Modern Day George Washington.

Dark Horse Podcast clips  Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying: an example of what free speech looks like when adults come together and logically pull apart issues to get to the truth. It's called critical thinking.

Children's Health Defense  Robert Kennedy Jr.'s organization that has worked hard to spread truth about health -- healthy eating and living and environments -- trying to educate the world on the dangers of drugging and vaccinating our kids for every little illness.

Man In America on YouTube, Rumble, etc. Soft spoken, always positive voice on being self sufficient, independent, pro active, realistic, and prepared for what is inevitable.

The Truth About Covid by Dr. Mercola

There is so much more out there. This is only a sample of people I found in the early days and listened to what they were saying, and of course, remained in tuned only because they were saying what I was already thinking.

One more thing: this is not an insult to people who lost love ones because of the virus. I know people who died, too. I also know a lot of people who got sick, including my husband and me, our kids, and our entire church family. We never made such a fuss about the flu, but here we are permitting our state and federal government to trample our Constitution in the name of health.

This post addresses the lies (overreaching and unconstitutional response) from our government (and the media). It is about losing our right to be in control of our lives and the sovereignty of our nation. That is why it is imperative that Americans stop complying, stop obeying the lies, and resist NOW. The lockdowns and mandates and school closures and rollercoaster ride has not ended. It is in a lull, but it will not go away unless we say NO MORE. It is a battle of the wills. And all I am saying is we have to stop it. Now.

Update: what's going on

It has been a few weeks since I have reviewed any books, and that is because we have now relocated to Florida. I've not been reading very much.

I wanted to share that two days before we moved, a friend and I took our kids to the US version of the Trucker's/People's Convoy send off, which started at Adelanto Stadium and was right around the corner from where we live[d]. The truckers and vehicles are driving to Washington D.C. We thought it would be a memorable history lesson for our kids.

It was freezing cold. I think it snowed later that night.

Speakers included Dr. Pierre Kory and Pastor Rob McCoy.

After speeches, Pastor McCoy read a Psalm and prayed, and we sang "Amazing Grace."

Leigh Dundas spoke to the crowd, also.

Another thing I did before we left Cali was took one more picture of a full California moon. I often take pics of the moon, but they always look the same. I cannot tell them apart.

Here is what I have been "reading" or listening to, specifically during the four day trip to Florida.

Finally, we gratefully arrived at our Florida destination on Monday. I have moved our "California exodus" story to a separate blog. You can find it H E R E.

I look forward to having a routine again and finding the energy to read and finish a book. I miss reading because reading is an indication that I am settled. And things are just not settled yet.

Maybe a few more weeks. I hope.

I have decided to write again

Earlier this year, I took a huge break from blogging. After becoming disheartened with everything, I deleted my blog (Great Book Study) forever.

At the beginning of summer, my family took a trip to other parts of America, to escape the oppressiveness of California. The moment we crossed into Arizona, I felt like Leonardo DiCaprio on the bow of the Titanic all the way to Florida. None of us wanted to return to California, though it is always sweet to go home.

In September, my father, who is in Florida, got Covid. He has Parkinson's and was ready to give up. My brother, who also lives in Florida, had to advocate hard for our dad to receive the monoclonal antibody treatment. Long story short, the hospital relented, and it saved my father's life, especially because he was treated early enough. He only suffered five days of symptoms, and then he recovered with ease.

That frightening experience pressured me to want to live in Florida so I could care for my dad. Before our trip, we were open to moving to Texas or Tennessee, but now my husband said he could see us in Florida. So...my husband has expanded his job search to Florida and has had numerous job interviews since summer of 2020, though nothing has panned out.

We are still looking for a way out of Cali, but without a replacement job in the other state first, it does not seem likely we are going anywhere soon.

The Gulf of Mexico as seen in Florida

I am trying to keep my chin up, being grateful for all that we still have that makes life livable; but the future of California is quite hopeless and bleak. Unless you are illegal, immoral, homeless, lawless, or extremely wealthy, this is no longer a great place to pursue dreams.

In the meanwhile, I have been gardening and growing food, particularly an over abundance of peppers: jalapeños, habaneros, siracha, serranos, and green peppers. In spring, I grew onions, romaine, cucumbers, and spinach through the summer. And we still have tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, and snow peas coming up. We also have two small citrus trees. My yard is finally becoming a jungle of green.

Of course, all of this global insanity has drawn me closer to my Savior. Every morning I read Scripture, copying whatever I feel compelled to copy. I read a Psalm at night, specifically Psalm 37, which gives me great comfort. And when the weather is decent, I take a long bike ride in the morning, while listening to hymns before I start the day with my kids.

And finally, I have found the desire to read again, which causes me to want to write. It brings me great  sanity and joy. I do miss meeting with Thomas Hardy and Laura Ingalls Wilder. I miss the heath and the prairie. I want to return to the classics that started me on my reading/writing journey in the first place -- all the books from The Well-Educated Mind by Susan Wise Bauer. I want to drop everything and start again.

However, I promised myself that I would finish reading the remainder of books on my shelves, which amount to 128, or something close to that. Then I may return to the beginning again. God willing.

So if you have come across this blog and are interested in what I am reading or curious how we make out in California, join me.

P.S. My blog title comes from one of my favorite bookish quote:

"With freedom, books, flowers, and the moon, who could not be happy?" ~ Oscar Wilde
